Design and implementing a failover cluster for an information analytical agency.

Case review:

Client is a developer of a few B2B information systems for large amount of users. Information systems interact with various governmental agencies, import huge amount of data, analyze it and provide users access to the results.


Objectives:

Design and implementing a fault-tolerant and secure cluster to host numerous virtual machines. Deploy load balancer and database clustering solutions.

Result:

To address the objectives we deployed a 2-node fault-tolerant cluster based on Microsoft Hyper-V and SAN-storage. Cluster hosts more than 30 virtual machines.

Network infrastructure was based on two Cisco ASA firewalls, and two Cisco Catalyst switches. Cluster nodes and SAN-storage were connected using FC-links and SAN-switches.

Client’s information systems were based on .NET technologies, and employed Microsoft SQL Server Database. Microsoft IIS Web-server and MS SQL Server were deployed using network load balancer that helped to improve the performance of web-application, and decrease the load on each node during the peak hours. In addition, such balancing provides an extra level of fault-tolerance in case of failure of a service within a web-application – all unhandled requests would be transferred to a working node by the load balancer.

IT infrastructure is being monitored by Veeam ONE, which brings tools that monitor performance of cluster and storage in different aspects, generates reports and alerts.

Client’s information systems passed MAX-Patrol certification test that addresses security of IT-infrastructure, IT policies and procedures.
